Frontierland is one of the furthest lands away from the entrance of the Magic Kingdom, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting. In fact, this will be one of the most exciting lands for thrill seekers. This land contains 2 of the famous “mountains” in the Magic Kingdom (Splash Mountain and Thunder Mountain). Themed like the American wild west, Frontierland will feel like an abandoned town. That’s because it is supposed to emulate a ghost town after the gold rush boom in the 1880s.

Read on to find out what all awaits in the wild west of the Magic Kingdom.

Attractions

  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – Aboard a runaway train where you will climb up a rickety hill, fall and climb up more hills, whip around corners, ride through tunnels, and just have a darn tootin’ good time.

  • Country Bear Jamboree – Watch a stage full of 18 audio-animatronic bears sing old Country Western songs that will have you laughing and stomping your feet in no time!

  • Splash Mountain – This starts off as a tame boat ride that will take you through the Br’er Patch where you will see Br’er Rabbit and his friends singing different tunes, but, by the end, you will find yourself plummeting down a approximately 50 feet. There are also some fun surprises in the middle for thrill seekers. FUN FACT: This ride is planned to be rethemed to Princess and the Frog sometime in the near future.

  • Tom Sawyer Island – While not a traditional attraction, Tom Sawyer Island is a short raft ride away. Here, you can explore caves, wander through Fort Sam Clemens, or find a place to relax that is away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the Magic Kingdom.

Dining

Quick Service Restaurants and Snack Carts

  • Golden Oak Outpost – This Old West-style brick building is a small outpost that offers a small selection of food and snacks to go.

  • Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe – This Old West saloons main offerings include Tex-Mex style food and Burgers. This is the main quick service restaurant in Frontierland that offers plenty of seating.

  • Westward Ho – This small stand in Frontierland offers some yummy hot and frozen beverages and some tasty snacks that will help get you through the day.

Shopping

  • Big Al’s – This little outdoor shopping kiosk has all of your Frontier themed merchandise. This includes things like cowboy hats, coonskin caps, and sheriff badges.

  • Briar Patch – This is where you will find your Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain themed merchandise. The shop remains closed for now, however.

  • Frontier Trading Post – This shop sells some Western themed merchandise, but, mainly, it is the place to buy and trade pins!

  • Splashdown Photos – You’ll find this shop at the end of your ride on Splash Mountain. This is where can pick up you Splash Mountain photos (if you choose), but it also has Splash Mountain themed merchandise. One can only imagine that it may switch to Princess & The Frog Merchandise after Splash Mountain gets it’s new theme.

Characters

There aren’t any permanent meet and greet areas in Frontierland, but, during normal times, you will frequently run into the country bear gang walking around (this includes Wendell, Big Al, Shaker, and Liver Lips) as well as Br’er Bear and Br’er Fox from Splash Mountain. You may also sometimes spot Clarabelle Cow and Horace Horsecollar in this area.

Being home to two of the biggest “thrill” rides in the Magic Kingdom, Frontierland will be an area that thrill seekers won’t want to miss! PRO TIP: Head to Frontierland first thing in the morning. Most people will stop at Adventureland first, and, many times, you will be able to get on both Splash Mountain and Thunder Mountain with little to no wait!
